Little Steps Phonics Sessions are for children who already have well developed speech and language skills and are confident communicators.

During each Little Steps Phonics class your child will learn to:

  • Recognise a specific sound
  • Identify the letter or letters of the alphabet that represent the sound
  • Blend letters in order to make words
  • De-code words, a key skill required for reading
  • Develop other key skills that they will require to make progress at school, including their gross and fine motor skills

Would you like to give your child a head start before they start school?

In their first year of school, your child will be taught Phonics. They will learn to recognise letters and state the sound that each letter makes. They will also learn to blend sounds, a key skill in learning to read.

Children learn Phonics best when they are given opportunities to repeatedly revisit letters and sounds, developing and consolidating their learning. First Steps Phonics can introduce you and your child to letters and sounds so that you are both familiar with Phonics before they start school, giving your child a head start with their learning. Each time your child attends a Little Steps Phonics session, they will be introduced to a new letter and the sound that it makes. They will gradually be introduced to ‘blending‘, helping them to begin to read words.

Would you like your child to learn other key skills that will help prepare them for school?

In their first year of school, children follow the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum. In addition to learning Phonics, your child will also need to develop other key skills. Key skills on the curriculum include gross and fine motor skills and numeracy. Each Little Steps Phonics class is mapped against the Early Years Curriculum Objectives. Consequently, in addition to helping you and your child to learn Phonics, Little Steps Phonics sessions will also provide continuous and varied opportunities for your child to develop other key skills, helping them to become ‘school ready‘.

Would you like to learn alongside your child through a series of interactive and engaging activities?

We believe that it is essential that parents understand Phonics in order to have the knowledge and skills to support their child’s learning once they start school. Consequently, in addition to engaging children through fun, interactive and educational activities, each Little Steps Phonics aims to also introduce parents to strategies that they can use at home to continue to support their child’s learning.
